What Clinton terms unhelpful, world says illegal

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in the West Bank, talking to Israeli and PA leaders as Israel was issuing orders for the demolition of 5 residential buildings in east Jerusalem containing 51 apartments. They described the buildings as “illegal” because building permits were not obtained. Palestinians contend that they can’t obtain building permits in East Jerusalem because Israel won’t issue them.

Sec. Clinton termed the demolitions “unhelpful” and noted that they violated the “road map” peace plan.

Dear Secretary of State Clinton. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you need to get up to speed on this issue. Not only does the settlement building and demolitions violate the road map, it is a violation of international law and has been the subject of numerous UN Resolutions such as Resolution 452 which “…’calls’ on Israel to cease building settlements in occupied territories” and Resolution 446 which  “…‘determines’ that Israeli settlements are a ‘serious obstruction’ to peace and calls on Israel to abide by the Fourth Geneva Convention”.

In the past, we have withheld aid to Israel, until they cease settlement building. It’s harder to do now that they get a lump sum grant as opposed to staged payments.

Nice deal.

It’s time for the U.S. to take a hard stand with our “greatest ally” in  the Middle east, because until we do, there will never be peace – anywhere. We will be viewed as a part of the problem not a part of the solution. Blind loyalty never served anyone well.

Israel should be told to abide by international law or lose their aid. They should be told to stop bombing the civilian areas in Gaza as they are too heavily concentrated. Find another way to stop the rocket attacks, like treat the Palestinians as human beings for a start. Open the border crossings, give then cement and pipes to rebuild their homes.

They should exhibit a small shred of human decency before they are given another dime or another cluster bomb.

If your friend was going to rob a grocery store and hoot the clerk, are you required to support them, because they are your friend?

I don’t think so.

We have to support them when they’re right, and condemn them when they are wrong.

They are clearly wrong on this issue. We should take a stand and stick with it, but it should be a stand in favor of human rights not politics as usual.

  1. Excellent post. I agree completely.

Of course, I was actually (and somewhat pleasantly) surprised that Hillary said a few things critical of Israel in her recent trip to the Middle East. She didn’t say enough, and the Palestinians shouldn’t trust her one bit. But she does seem slightly better than Condi Rice. Which, I admit, isn’t saying much.
